Clay maquette of Bronze Mont St Quentin Statue near Peronne, Somme France
Description
Clay maquette for the bronze statue erected at Mont St Quentin, France in 1971. The bronze statue was a replacement for the sculpture created by Charles Web Gilbert after the First World War. However, the statue was removed by German forces during the Second World War. Somme veteran 2106 Sgt William F Anderson MM BEM visited the site in 1960 and advocated for a replacement which was completed in 1971.
In recognition of his efforts, the artist, through the French Government sent him this replica (likely the original maquette) in addition to the Cross of the European Confederation of Ex Servicemen and the French Medal of Merit.
