White, Norman Martin (Lieutenant, b.1914)
Description
Diary of Lt White written whilst he was a POW in Changi and with 'F' Force on the Burma-Thailand Railway. The diary details the daily struggle of POWs against disease, starvation and the Japanese guards. White also gives details on the death rate of Australians in the camps, the lack of hygiene in the British POW camps and the very high death rate in British camps. The diary also contains handwritten copies of Lt Col F G Gallaghan speech to the POW in Changi on 4 September 1942, a letter from Lt Gen Tomoyaka Yamashita, a lecture by Lt Gen Sir Lewis Heath on the Malayan Campaign, and a list of articles manufactured in Changi and work done. The collection also contains a photograph of Lt White.
