Description

A Lancaster crew of 576 Squadron RAF which raided Berlin eleven times. The crew in their flying kit are identified, left to right: Sergeant (Sgt) J R (Jock) Mearns RAF, flight engineer; Flying Officer Gomer S (Taft) Morgan DFC, RAF pilot, (both in back of a truck); Flight Sergeant Pilot Officer Neil A. Lambell DFC, RAAF bomb aimer of NSW (back to photographer); Sgt J R (Blondie) O'Hanlon RA, Wireless Operator; Sgt Stan S Greenwood RAF, mid-upper gunner; Sgt C E (Bob) Shilling RAF, rear gunner; Flight Lieutenant Edward McPhee (Jock) Graham DFC, RAF, navigator. Formed at Elsham Wolds in Lincolnshire on the 25th November 1943, the squadron commenced operations on the night of the 2/3rd December 1943 with a raid on Berlin. This was at the height of the Battle of Berlin. Seven Lancasters and crews were detailed for this attack and one failed to return. In its first month of operations the Squadron lost seven Lancasters and crews which failed to return. The Squadron continued that winter taking part in many raids until the Battle of Berlin concluded at the end of March 1944.
