NX3231 Signalman Ian Milson Johnstone, 6th Division Signals, sits under cover with his signal ...
Description
NX3231 Signalman Ian Milson Johnstone, 6th Division Signals, sits under cover with his signal box, transmitting messages. Johnstone is eating his last half biscuit, the only food he has for 24 hours. Ian Johnstone offers this postscript: "This was taken at the site of the battalion HQ's overnight bivouac during their encirclement of Damour where we enjoyed the luxury of four riflemen acting as guards. One of the guards returned from a fossicking expedition with a can of horsemeat about the size of a medium soup can, which they proceeded to get rid of. I clamped my earphones over my ears and tried to ignore what was going on until I heard "Righto sig! you're in this too."". (Original print housed in AWM Archive Store)
