Description

The Minister for the Army, Mr Bob Katter, was on the move in NSW yesterday (July 12) visiting two of the Army's officer training establishments. During the morning, at the Officer Training Unit, Scheyville (pronounced Sky-ville) near Windsor, NSW, he reviewed his first graduation. Afterwards, he flew by Army helicopter to the Women's Royal Australian Army Corps School at Georges Heights, Sydney, NSW. At the Officer Training Unit, training centre for National Servicemen selected to receive commissions, Mr Katter reviewed a parade and presented graduation certificates and prizes to 82 officer cadets. It was the 27th class to graduate since the formation of OTU in April 1965. The graduates brought the total number of young men commissioned from the unit to 1664. For one of the National Servicemen - former Queensland primary school teacher, Kenneth Bremner - life has become something of a roundabout. The first swing took him from his schoolroom at Canungra, south of Brisbane, Qld, to Scheyville. There he graduated top of the class - and then made ready to swing back to Canungra. This time, as a member of the Royal Australian Infantry Corps wearing the badges of rank of a second lieutenant, he will be working at the Army's Jungle Training Centre. Mr Katter presented Senior Under Officer Bremner with his graduation certificate and four of the nine graduation prizes. They are the Sword of Honour, for exemplary conduct and performance of duty during the 21-weeks course; the Leadership Prize for highest officer rating; the Governor-General's Medal for topping the class; and the Staff Prize. Other prize winners were: Sergeant Desmond Forrester of Altona, Vic, the Gordon Sharp Memorial Prize and the Drill Prize; Officer Cadet Peter Dollman of Brisbane, Qld, the Military Arts Prize; Officer Cadet Peter Gadsden of Melbourne, Vic, the Sports Prize; Colour Sergeant Trevor Harders of Warracknabeal, Vic, the skill at Arms Prize. Also identified: Commandant Colonel K. P. Outridge; General Officer Commanding, Eastern Command, Major General K. Mackay.
