Special forces exercise DPR/TV/1610
The Eildon Weir area in Victoria, familiar to thousands of tourists and holiday makers, was the centre of an exercise area involving troops from Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne. The area, with its waterways, dense forest and towering rock faces, made it ideal for a variety of training by special forces troops ... Special Air Service Regiment men from Perth, and Citizen Military Forces commandoes from Melbourne and Sydney. Infantrymen from the Third Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, from Woodside near Adelaide SA were there too, along with signalmen from a Victorian unit. At a base camp deep in the forest, the SAS men prepare to move out on a reconnaissance. Trooper (Tpr) Ron Howell of Heidelberg, Victoria, prepares the machine gun on a special long range patrol vehicle. A steep incline is no obstacle to the vehicle which the troopers drove to Victoria from the in base near Perth. Dismounted, the SAS men, who were hunting an 'enemy' composed of the infantrymen from Adelaide, showed the training which especially fits them for behind the lines penetration of enemy territory. The 'enemy' is sighted, and the small patrol shows how it extricates itself when faced with a much stronger enemy group. Covering each other, they manage to slip back into the concealment of the forest.
