Description

Members of 2/19th Battalion of 8th Division march down Castlereagh Street near the corner of Hunter Street, lined with crowds of spectators. NX12610 Lieutenant Colonel Duncan Struan Maxwell, Commanding Officer, leads members of `A' Company. They are preceded by members of the first 2/19th Battalion band led by Drum Major Private Tom Scott. Identified in the front row: Pipers Arthur Robb, `A' Company (possibly NX52565 Corporal (Cpl) Allen Stewart Robb); Jock Crichton, Transport (probably NX35885 Pte Jack Creighton (later reported missing presumed killed in Malaya on 11 February 1942); NX59215 Raymond Thomas Downs, Signals (later reported missing presumed killed in Malaya on 11 February 1942); NX52566 Cpl Lindsay Walter Robb, Signals (died of illness while a POW in Thailand on 26 December 1943).
Second row: NX35654 Athol Nichols, Pioneer Platoon (later held as a POW); NX29830 Glanville Walter ‘Glen’ Scriven, Transport Platoon (discharged 6 February 1943); NX35989 Cpl John ‘Jock’ McInnes, Base Drum (killed in action in Malaya on 9 February 1942); NX53545 Cpl John Blair ‘Jack’ Corry, Battalion Headquarters (POW). Drummers: NX35494 Driver Stanley Brodie Cannon, Transport Platoon (POW); NX60296 Private (Pte) Arthur Fredrick Lake, of Mittagong, NSW; `B' Company; NX57069 Pte Austin Joseph George ‘Snow’ Ellis, `C' Company (POW); NX55163 Sgt Leonard William Hodgson, Mortar Platoon (POW). Cpl Corry, on base drum, and Pte Lake, on cornet, later joined the Unit band on formation. The other members went back to their platoons and companies.
