Description

An informal group portrait of four signallers with the 2/19th Battalion. The Battalion was later captured by the Japanese in the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942 and two of these men were held as prisoners of war (POW). Identified from left to right: NX52490 Corporal Ronald James White from Leeton, NSW (POW); NX35771 Private Hubert William ‘Jim’ Byron, from Beckom near Ardlethan, NSW (died of wounds in Malaya on 22 January 1942) with pick; NX33597 Pte Walter Stanley ‘Stan’ Cordingley from Bellview Hill, NSW (later Lieutenant); and NX33595 Pte John Carr from Kings Cross, NSW (POW) on switchboard with headset.
