Collection relating to the Second World War experiences of Sister Mary Helena Egan, Kiribati, c.1939-1945.
Wallet 1 of 1 consists of recollections of missionaries experiences during the Japanese occupation of Kiribati (Gilbert and Ellice Islands), from December 1941 until liberation by the Americans in November 1943. During the Japanese occupation of Kiribati, Sister Egan was stationed on Abaing Island. She describes treatment by the Japanese, the murder of European and Gilbertese men, and the battle of Tarawa. Includes photocopied extracts from United Nations War Crimes Commission charges against Matzu Shosa and Yokota Teii.
