Longueval, France. 1917-01. Lieutenant (Lt) Cyril Lawrence, No. 1 Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers, sits on the bank of a crater made by a German 11 inch naval gun. The shell hole measured twenty-two feet in diameter and was nine feet deep. Lt Lawrence was in bed at the time, only twelve feet from the edge of the crater. Note his balaclava worn in the very cold conditions. (Original housed in AWM Archive Store)
