Description
Basra, Mesopotamia. 1918. Aerial view of the port of Ashar with the Shatt-el-Arab in the foreground. Note the ocean going vessels and the dockyards of the Inland Water Transport. Basra (Basrah) was the base of the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force. It was divided into four parts: Ashar (Aspher) the port, old Basra (two miles inland), Makina and Magil (the military encampments to the north west).
