Description
Lemnos, Greece, c. 1915-04. Soldiers probably of the 1st Divisional Train, Australian Army Service Corps (AASC), attach a sling connected to a hoist to one of the unit's horses (left) so that the animal can be lifted aboard the transport ship City of Benares (not in view). Other soldiers wait with a number of other horses which are also to be lifted aboard the vessel. Several open staff cars are parked near the horses, while behind them is a barge loaded with crates of ammunition or other supplies. Spare wagon wheels are stacked together in front of the barge (right). The ship will soon set sail for Gallipoli.
