Basra, Mesopotamia. 1919-11-05. Members of `D' Troop, 1st Wireless Signal Squadron, line the rails of HMAT Varela as she moves out from the wharf on the way to Bombay and Australia, returning the troops home. This detachment saw fighting later than any other formed unit of the AIF, being under fire in 1919-10 in Kurdistan as part of the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force.
