Beresford, William E (Captain, b.1919)
Description
Two letters written by Japanese prisoners of war in Rabaul to Captain Beresford. The letters were written after the cessation of hostilities, when Captain Beresford went to Rabaul with HQ 11 Division to be the messing officer. Letters relate to a pair of binoculars not surrendered to the Australian Army, and to a gift of thanks given by Japanese officers prior to Beresford's return to Australia. The third item is a letter in Japanese (translation attached), also regarding the giving and receiving of gifts.
