Description

Portrait of a No. 2 Squadron RAAF Hudson light bomber crew standing in front of their aircraft, A16-177 (constructor's no 6349). Left to right: Hugh Reilly, Pilot Officer (PO) Ron Ryan, 408811 Flying Officer (FO) Ralph R James, Sergeant (Sgt) Pat Reen and Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) Ken Keech. This crew achieved the notable feat of shooting down two Japanese Zero fighter aircraft over Dili, Timor, on their first operational sortie from Darwin. FO James, PO Ryan, Sgt Reen and Flt Sgt Keech were all killed on 28 April 1943 when their Hudson A16-241 failed to return from a search for a missing Beaufighter crew over the Arafura Sea. The Hudson shown, A16-177, survived the war and was sold in 1946 for use as Lockhed Lodestar spares. (Originals housed in AWM Archive Store)
