Description

A mixed collection documenting Hamilton-Webb's wartime career in Egypt and the Middle East with the British Army, principally over 1941-42. He served with the Royal Engineers (Movement and Transportation) based at Alexandria, before transferring to the Army Films Unit at Cairo (from January 1942) and afterwards to the Ministry of Information's Films Division at the British Embassy (from October 1942). There are three personal diaries (1940, 1941, 1942) containing brief daily entries, with some gaps (e.g. August-October 1942), noting his activities and occasionally commenting on military developments, particularly the desert war. There are references to Tobruk and to places in the areas he visited (e.g. Bardia, Malta, Shellal, Aswam), including towns in Palestine he stayed in after being evacuated from Cairo in July 1942 (e.g. Jerusalem, Haifa, Beirut). The collection also includes some pre and post-War personal items, including personnel records, identity cards (including a NSW Police press pass of 1923), vehicle registration books and business cards.
