Bairstow, John Leslie (Jack) (Pilot Officer, b.1918 - d.1944)
Letters and airgraphs written by RAAF no. 427632 Pilot Officer John (Jack) Leslie Bairstow to his mother Mrs L.K. Bairstow of Tillellan Farm, Wagin, WA. Bairstow served in the 13 Field Coy Royal Australian Engineers at Melville Camp WA, before transferring to 4 Service Training Flying School at Geraldton WA and subsequently to 1660 Conversion RAF in England. His letters written from Geraldton, WA and various unidentified bases in Somerset and Oxfordshire describe family news, living conditions, rations, boredom, entertainment, receipt of parcels and letters, leave, visits to London, Liverpool, the Boomerang Club,and the Lady Frances Ryder scheme. Bairstow was killed in action 30 August 1944 and there are 18 letters and telegrams of condolence from relatives and friends. Some describe attitudes to the war and loneliness.
