Horn, William (Able Seaman, b.1829 - d.1910)
Description
Handwritten manual entitled "Naval gunnery as taught on board H.M.S. Excellent under the command of Captain R.T.Hewlett C.B.: commenced Dec. 2nd 1857: finished June 4th 1858" prepared by William Horn. Provides considerable technical detail and drawings, exercises, instructions and drill and index. The weapons and practices described formed the basis of Australian naval armament for much of the nineteenth century. The Royal Navy's gunnery establishment had been formed on board the HMS Excellent at Portsmouth in the early 1830s.
