Dacy, Desmond Joseph (Sergeant, b.1917 - d.1986)
Collection relating to the Second World War service of Sergeant Desmond Joseph Dacy, Borneo and Australia, 1942-1945.
The collection consists of two diaries written by Sergeant Dacy covering the periods October 1942 to April 1943 and March to September 1945. In the diaries Dacy describes his work with Royal Australian Air Force radar stations including the 308 Radar Station based in the Cape Pasir area near Tarakan in Borneo in 1945. In the earlier part of the first diary Dacy describes the time he spent in the north of Australia building radar towers. This work included visits to Thursday Island, the Bathurst Island Mission, Melville Island and Darwin. Dacy's diary entries contain detailed descriptions of air raids on Darwin, the landings and subsequent operations at Tarakan in 1945 and mopping up operations after the cessation of hostilities in August 1945.
The typescript, prepared by Desmond Dacy's family after his death in 1986, contains photos of Desmond and his family but only covers the first of his diaries.
