Description

British Army issue, khaki wool serge, battledress trousers with brown Bakelite buttons, and button up pocket on left thigh. The waist pockets and fly are reinforces with khaki cotton. On the inside left side there is a stamp of red ink 'Z / W / Broad Arrow D/ 676.' And on the right side is a 9 stamped. There is a shell dressing pocket on right thigh and a pocket in the right trouser seat. The makers label appears on the rear waist and reads 'Battledress / trousers, serge / SIZE No. 9 / The West Auckland Clothing Co Ltd / 1945. Stamped over this is 11 Jan 1940 / Broad Arrow.'

Issued to 14219584 Trooper William Frederick McCrea-Steele, British 7th Armoured Division. His unit landed in Normandy in July 1944 and he served in Europe until June 1946.
