History / Summary
HMAS Warreen, was originally a purpose built survey vessel, Stella, commissioned by the CSIRO in 1938. During the Second World War she was transferred to the RAN as HMAS Stella in 1942, where she surveyed shallow uncharted waters, sometimes behind enemy lines and under fire. Returned to the CSIRO after the war, Stella was once again transferred to the RAN in 1951 as a general purpose vessel, and was renamed HMAS Warreen.
