History / Summary

Associated with NX58640 Private Roy Henry Joseph Warren, a twenty year old soap boiler from Balmain, who enlisted at Paddington, NSW, on 11 July 1940 and was posted to 2/18 Australian Infantry Battalion. He married on 16 October 1940. He embarked from Sydney on 18 February 1941, arriving in Singapore on 1 March 1941, and fought in the Malayan campaign. Warren was captured by the Japanese in the Botanical Gardens in Singapore on 15 February 1942. He was held as a POW in Changi until April 1942 then moved to Blakang Mati (now known as Sentosa Island). He returned to Changi Hospital with dysentery in August 1943 then moved to Kranji Hospital in April 1944. Warren was released in 1945 and was discharged after further hospital treatment in Australia on 5 February 1946. He died on 18 January 1997.
