Woven cellophane belt : Angus McDonell
Description
Pale-yellow, green and burgundy coloured, woven cellophane belt. The belt has been constructed by sewing together two two-stranded lengths of woven cellophane to leave a void centre row. The outer edges of the belt alternates between green and burgundy coloured cellophane in 210mm long sections.
History / Summary
This belt was made by Angus McDonell while he was confined to bed in a hospital in Milne Bay, New Guinea during 1942-43. He had a tropical ulcer and was not allowed to walk. Red Cross workers suggested that he take up the craft as a form of occupational therapy. The cellophane from cigarette packs was collected and folded, then woven together. Mcdonell used cellophane from packets owned by other soldiers as well as his own.
