Marine Clinometer : SS Eastern
Brass, wall mounted, marine clinometer calibrated to measure 70 degrees roll. Marked 'MARINE CLINOMETER' at the top of face, and with the maker's name at the bottom.
This marine clinometer was fitted in the captain's day room aboard the SS Eastern, owned by the Eastern and Australian Steamship Company, a subsidiary of P&O England. The ship was built by Joseph Thompson & Son Ltd at Sunderland in November 1944 for the British Ministry of War Transport and was an Empire class vessel originally named 'Empire Dynasty'. The vessel was purchased after the war and plied Australia to Asia runs. It was used to supply the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces (BCOF) at Kure in Japan, and to repatriate Japanese prisoners of war (POW) from Pacific Islands. The ship was scrapped in 1966-1967.
