Nui Dat, South Vietnam. August 1970. It was a high powered meeting for Sergeant (Sgt) Charles Sherrin of Shepparton, Vic, when the Commander of the Australian Force in Vietnam (COMAFV), Major General (Maj Gen) C. A. E. Fraser flew from Saigon specially to talk with men of 8 Platoon, 8th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (8RAR). Sgt Sherrin led his platoon in an ambush on about fifty Viet Cong near the village of Hoa Long, killing seventeen of them.
