Description

Bakli Bay, Hainan Island. c. 28 August 1945. Although the Japanese had directed that all sick and debilitated were to be take to Hainan from Ambon as hospital facilities would be available there, this was completely untrue. There was no separate accommodation for the sick, except such as the prisoners could build for themselves. Shown lying on a bed is a Dutch prisoner of war (POW), Private C. Bierenbroodshot, suffering from beri-beri.
