Paybook photograph, taken on enlistment, of NX78229 Corporal (Cpl) Kenneth Clifton Molde (served as L. K. Dawson), 2/30th Infantry Battalion, Australian Infantry. He was one of over 2000 Allied prisoners of war (POW) held in the Sandakan POW camp in north Borneo, having been transferred there from Singapore as a part of B Force. The 1494 POW's that made up B Force, were transported from Changi on 7 July 1942 on board the tramp ship Ubi Maru, arriving in Sandakan Harbour on 18 July 1942. Cpl Molde, aged 28, escaped the Japanese with Gunner Fuller on 14 February 1945 during one of the marches. He was shot in the elbow as he escaped and although given food and shelter by the villagers died in late March 1945. He was the son of Ernest William and Margaret Isabella Molde. He is buried in the Labuan Cemetery Section 21, Row B, Plot 12.
