Portrait of 5649 Private (Pte) Edward Biken Ashcroft, 17th Reinforcements, 5th Battalion 2nd Pioneer Battalion, of Windsor, Vic. Pte Ashcroft died of wounds in France on 8 May 1917. Pte Ashcroft enlisted on 21 February 1916 along with his brother 5648 Pte William Henry Ashcroft, who was killed in action on 20 December 1916. Another brother who served in the same battalion, 3451 Pte Walter Benjamin Ashcroft, suffered a double ampution. (Donor J. Taylor)
