Portrait of 5648 Private (Pte) William Henry Ashcroft, 17th Reinforcements, 5th Battalion, of Windsor, Vic. Pte Ashcroft was killed in action in France on 20 December 1916. Private Ashcroft enlisted on 21 February 1916 along with his brother 5649 Pte Edward Beken Ashcroft who died of wounds in France on 8 May 1917. A third brother, 3451 Pte Walter Benjamin Ashcroft, 2nd Pioneer Battalion, enlisted on 17 August 1915. He survived the war, suffering a double amputation. (Donor J. Taylor)
