Sermaize les Bains, France. Charles Francis (Frank) Fryer, an Australian, checks under the bonnet of a 1912 Ford Model T ambulance used by the Friends Ambulance Unit, a service established by the Society of Friends (Quakers). Mr Fryer joined the Friends Ambulance Unit as a driver transporting the sick and wounded to designated hospitals. Note the star on the side of the ambulance is red and black, the symbol of the Friends as well as the red cross. Mr Fryer and the other driver also have the symbol on their caps. (Donor B. Holt)
