History / Summary
130 Trooper Herbert John Ellis enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 19 August 1914, aged 32. A veteran of the Australian Commonwealth Horse (WA) during the South African War, he embarked for overseas service with 'A' Squadron, 3 Light Horse Regiment. He sailed in October 1914 aboard HMAT Port Lincoln and saw action at Gallipoli. However, he was evacuated off the peninsula and on 7 August 1915 died in Alexandria from enteric and pneumonia. He was the eldest son of Arthur and Margaret Ellis of Rosewater, SA. His two younger brothers were killed in action during the war.
