Description
On the eve of 31 May 1942, Australia made its first acquaintance with Japanese submarines. Three of them entered into Sydney Harbour and their combined efforts resulted in the sinking of HMAS Kuttabul resulting in the deaths of nineteen Australian and two British sailors. Within an hour or so of their entrance one submarine had been sunk by gunfire and the other two by depth charges. This photo shows the burial service being held for the naval men killed during the attack. Identified sixth from the right, watching the service, is Lieutenant Commander Edwin Max Andrewartha.
