Description

On 31 May 1942, Australia made its first acquaintance with Japanese submarines. Thre of them sneaked into Sydney Harbour and their combined efforts resulting in the sinking of harbour vessels of no military value. Within an hour or so of their entrance, one had been sunk by gunfire and the other two by depth charges. This scene shows the damage caused to an Eastern Suburbs (Sydney) home. The grocery store, with home above it, belongs to Mr and Mrs Richards and is situated on the corner of Small and Fletcher Streets, Woolahra.
