Description

Italy. 8 July 1944. Group portrait of some of the RAF Bristol Beaufighter crews who are responsible for firing oil barges on the River Danube during night attacks. Left to right: Squadron Leader J. F. McLaren of Plas Newydd, Anglesey, pilot; Flying Officer (FO) A. W. Tozer of Heston, Middlesex, navigator; Pilot Officer M. A. Wingham of North Parade, Grantham, navigator; FO R. E. Reynolds of Kingsmere Park, NW9, pilot; Flight Lieutenant W. T. Cunningham of Cavendish Place, Newcastle-on-Tyne, navigator; FO B. Bretherton of Melbourne, Vic, pilot; FO T. E. Johnson, Haywards Heath, Sussex, navigator. A dog sits in front of the group. The Beaufighters of Coastal Air Force have caused great havoc among the enemy shipping between Belgrade and Sombor, about 100 miles northwest of Belgrade, and have penetrated as far as Hungary. Targets among the shipping on the river have been, for the most part, barges varying between 100 and 300 feet and carrying oil, ammunition or supplies.
