Brass Shell Case from Japanese 75 mm Mortar (Gallipoli)
Description
Fired brass shell casing from a breech loaded Japanese trench mortar used by Australian forces at Gallipoli in 1915. The fired primer is still attached to the brass shell casing.
History / Summary
This shell case was used with one of four Japanese 75 mm mortars at Gallipoli. This case was supposedly used by Australian troops at Steele's post, Gallipoli. This use of this type of shell case is unusual because it is ammunition which is loaded in the breech of the mortar and used to propel the spigot and warhead from the barrel.
