[Studies for The Anzacs]
Coverless sketchbook containing 30 sketches of horses, landscape and Anzac Light Horse Memorial 1919
Several pencil studies that concentrate on the supine figure of the soldier with his gun at the ready which comprises part of the grouping of figures represented in the sculpture 'The Anzacs' which was created for the Desert Mounted Corps Memorial Competition.
The figure lying on the ground with his rifle at the ready represents a typical New Zealander steadily firing at the enemy. Lambert experiments here with many different viewing angles of this figure.
The Desert Mounted Corps Memorial was to commemorate all the Australian Mounted Divisions, the Australian Flying Corps and every other Australian and New Zealand unit and formation that served in Egypt, Palestine and Syria from 1916 to 1918.
