A sunset view of the mouth of the Song Co May (river) at the South China Sea, looking east, with the Long Hai hills dominating the skyline. Tidal flows serve the many tributaries of this estuary distributing rich alluvial soils in their wake in this the 'rice bowl' of Vietnam. This scene was taken some nine km north east of the Vung Tau military airfield, just south of the Cau Cay Khe Bridge on National Route 15 between Baria, the provincial capital, to the north, and the seaport of Vung Tau. The Long Hai hills took their name from the village of Xa Long Hai, just visible on the coastline below the most southerly ridge on the skyline. Significant Australian casualties from Viet Cong-laid mines resulted from operations into these hills. (Colour version of the same image is held at PO2975.065).
