Description
Men of No. 15 Platoon, D Company, 58th Battalion moving forward towards Sailly-le-Sec, along the bank of the Somme Canal, near Vaux-sur-Somme. The Platoon Commander, Lieutenant Ivo Garfield Thompson is the second figure from the right (killed in action at Ville-sur-Ancre 4 July 1918). The village of Vaire is seen in the distance on the left bank of the canal. Also identified is Lieutenant Norman Dalgleish DSO (wounded at Belicourt and later died of wounds on 9 October 1918) is seen in the centre of photograph walking alone.
