Description

Outdoor portrait of seven Australian Prisoners of War (POW) at Friedrichsfeld POW Camp Germany, three of whom are unidentified. Identified standing on left is 1664 Pte Albert James Bruce, 10th Battalion, from Baldina, SA. Standing second from left is 4367 Pte Thomas Aistrope, 27th Battalion, from Adelaide SA. Standing third from left is 1656 Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) Edward Hillary Dowd, 48th Battalion from Terowie, SA. Sitting on left is 4760 Pte Leonard Short, 27th Battalion, from Millswood SA. Pte Bruce enlisted at the age of 21 on 23 June 1915 and embarked for overseas on 27 October 1915 aboard HMAT Benalla. He was captured at Mouquet Farm, France on 20 August 1916 and held as a POW in Germany until repatriated to Switzerland on 30 August 1918. Pte Bruce arrived in England on 9 December 1918 and arrived back in Australia on 13 May 1919. Pte Aistrope enlisted at the age of 23 on 24 January 1916 and embarked for overseas on 25 March 1916 aboard HMAT Shropshire. He was captured at Le Sars, France on 5 November 1916 and held as a POW until repatriated to England on 22 November 1918. Pte Aistrope arrived back in Australia on 18 April 1919. L/Cpl Dowd enlisted at the age of 26 on 14 March 1915 and embarked for overseas on 11 April 1915 aboard HMAT Aeneas. He was captured at Bullecourt, France on 11 April 1917 and held as a POW until repatriated to England on 25 November 1918. L/Cpl Dowd arrived back in Australia on 18 April 1919. Pte Short enlisted at the age of 21 on 26 January 1916 and embarked for overseas on 11 April 1916 aboard HMAT Aeneas. He was wounded by a grenade in both lower arms and captured at Le Serre, France on 5 November 1916. After being held as a POW in various camps in Germany he was repatriated to England on 22 November 1918 and arrived back in Australia on 21 March 1919. One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E. Chomley, Secretary, Prisoners Department, Australian-British Red Cross Society, London.
