Description

These men from C Company, 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR), have recently returned from a 21 day jungle patrol in Northern Malaya, where they have been tracking the last elements of Communist terrorists still operating in the area. Although the Emergency is officially over, Australian troops are still heavily committed to jungle operations and patrols to clear the remaining Communists. Identified left to right: 5/2350 Private (Pte) Stanley W (Stan) Davies, of Tuart Hill, WA; 4/2002 Pte (later Lance Corporal) Frederick William (Fred) Crawford, of Oakbank, SA; 4/739 Corporal (Cpl) (later Sergeant) Reginald Laurence 'Tex' Phillips (playing the guitar), of Renmark, SA; 2/411081 Pte Peter Duff Wilkes, of Bundook, NSW; 2/9600 Pte Alf J Finnie of North Bondi, NSW; Pte Terry Newbury, of Inala, Qld, with a tattoo on his left arm relating to his service in Malaya. Pte Davies and Pte Finnie also served with 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) in Malaya. Pte Crawford served in Korea with 3RAR between 1952 and 1953 and with 1RAR in 1953. Cpl Phillips also served in Korea with 3RAR between 1951 and 1952 and later with 1RAR between 1954 and 1955. Pte Wilkes later served in South Vietnam with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) between 1968 and 1969.
