Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) L Thompson (left), of Nedlands, WA, Deputy Commander, 1st Battalion, Royal Western Australia Regiment , is a member of the Citizen Military Forces (CMF) and is one of five CMF officers completing a two week tour of operational areas in Northern Malaya. Lt Col Thompson is getting a lesson in jungle tracking from an unidentified Iban tracker (centre) of the Sarawak Rangers who is attached to 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR). 5/410739 Private (Pte) Arthur E Jackson (right), aged 22, of Kalgoorlie, WA, 1RAR, looks on. The Iban tracker is armed with a 7.62mm L1A1 self loading rifle (SLR) and Pte Jackson is armed with a 9mm Owen machine carbine.
