Three gun crew members from 102nd Field Battery, Royal Australian Artillery (RAA), passing 105mm rounds forward to a waiting L5 Pack Howitzer, which will provide fire support for an Australian infantry patrol. The gun site is at an unknown 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), forward company base. The ammunition has been passed up from the magazine below the gunners feet (note the hand in the hatchway). Identified, left to right: 5411197 Lance Bombardier (LBdr) (later Major) Bernard Patrick (Bernie) McDonnell, of Kalgoorlie, WA; 1410746 Gunner (Gnr) Lindsay Arthur Elgar, of Rockhampton, Qld; 15961 Gnr Howard P Lewis, of Sunnybank, Qld. LBdr McDonnell later served in South Vietnam with 4th Field Regiment, RAA, between 1967 and 1968. Gnr Elgar later served in South Vietnam with 12th Field Regiment, RAA between 1968 and 1969 where he was awarded a Mention in Despatches (MID) for his actions at Fire Support Base Coral in 1968. Gnr Lewis also served in Malaya and Singapore during the Malayan Emergency.
