History / Summary

7579 Warrant Officer Class II Eric Charles Fox enlisted on 11 August 1915 and served with 5 Field Artillery Brigade, AIF. He saw action on the Western Front, and was wounded at Ypres. He returned to Australia on 20 May 1919. During the Second World War he served as NX14373 Warrant Officer Class 1 with 2/5 Field Regiment and saw service in Syria and later in New Guinea. He was a member of the Manly Life Saving Club and the only member to have his name recorded on the clubs' Roll of Honour for both world wars. He died in 1964. The recommendation for his Military Medal reads, 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the 2nd September 1918 at HALLE, near PERONNE, when the officer in charge of his battery [15th Battery] was killed and several Gunners wounded, this Non Commissioned Officer immediately took charge of his battery. He personally supervised and assisted in getting away the wounded men and as the position was being very heavily shelled, withdrew the detachment to a flank, thereby saving further casualties. His conduct set a splendid example to the men of his battery.'
