Description

Bois de l'Abbe, France. 29 April 1918. The limit of the German offensive near Villers-Bretonneux. From this wood in rear of Villers-Bretonneux on 4 April the British batteries were forced to withdraw, the capture of the village and wood being, however, averted by the 9th Australian Infantry Brigade and British Cavalry. On 24 April the Germans, attacking the British line at Villers-Bretonneux with tanks, captured the town and penetrated to the centre of the wood, from both of which they were thrown back by a counter-attack made at night by the 13th and 15th Australian Infantry Brigades.
