Description

A congested dugout, fifteen feet below the surface level of the ramparts at Ypres, where some of the 1st Divisional units were enjoying a rest from the line. Note the steel girder ceiling and heavy supporting uprights. Accommodation for a considerable number of men was provided in the underground systems of the ramparts which were electrically lit and fairly comfortable.
