Description
Australian stretcher bearers coming in under a white flag, passing the old cemetery of Pozieres, having come from the line near Mouquet Farm. At this point Tramway Trench crossed Brind's Cut. The white flag, usually made on the spot out of a handkerchief or any white rag, was intended to stand for a Red Cross flag. Parties carrying this flag were not usually fired on, at this time, by German snipers, although as can be seen behind the men, the use of the flag did not affect German artillery barrages.
