Chailak Dere, Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey. 1915. Near the apex of the centre point, a little on the left, was situated a Turkish trench which seriously blocked the advance of the Mounted Rifles on the night of 6/7 August 1915. The barbed wire in front of this trench was finally cleared away by New Zealand engineers and Maori at about 11 p.m. Meanwhile Mounted Rifles had taken Walden Point, and by midnight the whole of Bauchop's Hill was occupied.
