Chailak Dere, Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey. 1915. It was in this gully that the Mounted Rifles were seriously blocked by an enemy trench on the night of 6/7 August 1915. The barbed wire in front of it was finally cleared away by New Zealand engineers and Maori at about 11 p.m. Meanwhile Mounted Rifles had taken Walden Point, and by midnight the whole of Bauchop's Hill was occupied.
