Description

At Sea. The battleship HMS Nelson of 33,900 tons displacement was commissioned in 1927 and later saw service in the Second World War. She served in the Mediterranean in July 1941 when she was part of the escort force for Malta convoys. In late 1941 she was nominated to be one of the units in the Eastern Fleet to be formed for operations in the Indian Ocean. With Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily, planned for mid 1943, Nelson returned to the Mediterranean to be part of the British naval forces for the purpose of covering intervention by Italian forces against this Allied operation. In 1945, Nelson was the flagship of the East Indies Fleet steaming towards the Malayan Peninsula with the intention of occupying Penang. Following the capitulation of the Japanese Government on 14 August 1945, the surrender of the Japanese commander at Penang was accepted on board Nelson. After her long career, Nelson was scrapped in 1948.
