Description

Studio portrait of Captain (Capt) Cyril Abey, 1st Infantry Brigade, from Hobart, Tasmania. A 27 year old bank clerk prior to enlisting in the AIF on 17 August 1914, he embarked for overseas as a Private (service number 921) with the Australian Army Service Corps from Melbourne in October 1914 aboard HMAT Geelong. While serving at Gallipoli, he was promoted to Second Lieutenant and then later promoted to Lieutenant on 20 February 1916 and to Captain on 4 March 1917. While serving on the Western Front, he was awarded a Military Cross for his high standard of work at Headquarters in 1917. Capt Abey returned to Australia on 5 January 1919 on special leave for personnel who had served for over four years.
